Brown Universitys Writer for University Initiatives and Student Life serves as part of the News and Editorial Development unit in the Office of University Communications. The writer is a strategist and cross-platform content producer who develops and guides editorial content for externally facing communications about initiatives being undertaken by the University and aspects of the Brown University experience that pertain to campus life outside of academics. This includes communicating about news and information that comes out of the University administration pertaining to Browns role in the community, leadership initiatives, Corporation activities and major fundraising; communicating about programs, initiatives and services that frame the student experience beyond the classroom; and communicating about Browns robust student life. To share major programs and activities that help demonstrate what is uniquely Brown, the writer develops and maintains a relationship with units within the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, the Office of Policy and Planning, the Office of Admission, the Office of Financial Aid, and other key administrative units, as well as the many student identity centers and student organizations on campus. The writer shares information about University initiatives and student life activities via news releases, websites, e-communications, online and print publications, and other strategic vehicles intended to demonstrate Browns strengths among external audiences. The editorial responsibilities are multifaceted, supporting the news, media relations, social media and Web functions of the Office of University Communications, along with strategic editorial support for campus clients.
A college degree is required.

Minimum five years of professional experience in journalism and/or media relations.

Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing news coverage plans.

Excellent writing and editing skills, including proficiency in Associated Press writing style.

Demonstrated ability to research information, conduct effective interviews and write well and quickly.

Experience using computing tools for conducting research on the Internet, for communicating by e-mail, for writing documents that are properly formatted in appropriate templates, and maintaining appropriate story databases.

Experience developing effective messaging tailored to audiences.

Ability to sustain and build rapport with stakeholders.

Proven experience managing multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.

Comfort with using online databases, editing tools and content management systems.

Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

The Writer for University Initiatives and Student Life represents the University in a very public way, preparing information for local, regional and national media about Brown and its programs. The writer also is a collaborator and guide on effective communications, and must cultivate understanding of communications strategy among administrators in campus units. The Writer needs to be a person of diplomacy, poise and confidence, qualities that come from a well-developed understanding of the University and its people.
The writer is expected to work occasional nights and weekends, aligned with special events that occur at times during the academic year.

NOTE: Candidates selected for initial and final rounds of interviews will be required to complete a writing exercise.
