Dates: 05/08/2023 - 05/19/2023New employees will be compensated at
a wage rate of fifteen percent (15%) below the contractual rate of
pay for the period of July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. Wages for new
employees will be increased in five percent (5%) increments
annually on the anniversary of the date of hire. On June 30, 2025,
new employees shall receive the full contractual rate. This rate
does not apply to IT Department positions.The City of Providence

with the City.Job SummaryUnder supervision of the Chief Engineer or
his/her designee, performs professional engineering work in the
office or field in connection with the investigation, planning,
development, design, construction, and maintenance of public works
projectsDuties & Responsibilities
- Participates in the development and execution of engineering
investigations, surveys, designs, computations, drawings,
specifications, quantity and cost estimates, inspection and
supervision of new construction, reconstruction, maintenance and
repairs, of public works features and land development, including
but not limited to alterations and repairs to buildings, roads,
sidewalks, bridges, structures including dams, tunnels,
distribution and transmission facilities, pumping stations, storm
and sanitary sewer systems, docks and harbors, and all other
miscellaneous public works structures, machinery, and
equipment.
- Exercises independent judgment in planning and executing work
details and making technical decisions based on complex detailed
instructions received from a superior.
- Investigate complaints alleging damages caused by public works
activities.
- Act as principal assistant to senior engineers, and/or acts as
resident engineer on construction projects, utility projects and
land development projects. Prepare and maintain plans, maps,
construction records and other engineering data. Enforce adherence
to plans, specifications and otherwise protecting the City's
interests.
- Prepare, create and modify engineering maps, records, and
reports as required, both manually and electronically.
- Exercises direct supervision and guidance over contractors,
contract inspectors and other subordinate personnel.
- Prepare estimates for curbing, grading, sidewalks and road
projects.
- Assists public in obtaining plans, records and issuing
permits.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent with courses in drafting,
preferably college level courses in engineering drawing and civil
engineering.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in engineering
fundamentals, of a character and grade demonstrating achievements,
abilities, and knowledge applicable to the public works, horizontal
construction and/or utility operation.
- Working knowledge or experience gained in the materials,
methods, design, construction, operation, techniques and
maintenance of large-scale engineering and construction
projects.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with members
of the public.
- Ability to supervise the work of contractors and others, and to
enforce adherence to plans, specifications and policies.
- Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written
instructions.
- Ability to transcribe field notes and draw accurate plans.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the
job.
- Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.Training
RequirementsPreferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD software
- Proficiency in the field of land survey and pertinent
mathematics. Ability to use survey equipment, such as, but not
limited to GPS, total station, transit, level, etc.).Training
Requirements:
- 1. Successful Completion of introductory Microsoft Office Suite
class within six months of hire, or demonstration of proficiency at
time of hire.The term "limited" means that the successful candidate
will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The
position may or may not become permanent.
