About the OpportunityThe Office of Research Integrity (ORI) at Brown University partners with the research community to facilitate ethical research guided by governing policies and regulations. ORI provides oversight of human and animal subjects research, financial conflicts of interest, and use of human embryonic stem cells in research. It also reviews allegations of research misconduct and other reports of research-related noncompliance, and promotes integrity in scholarship by administering one of Browns responsible conduct of research programs. ORI also administers the Universitys export control compliance program, and serves as a centralized resource to support the responsible management and sharing of research data. ResponsibilitiesWe are looking for an Assistant Director to join our team of professional compliance specialists to manage Browns Export Control and Research Security program. Reporting to the Senior Director of the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) , the Assistant Director has primary responsibility for facilitating and managing, the Universitys export control and research security compliance program. They are responsible for procuring and maintaining current export licenses, updating institutional policy, providing guidance, education, and strategic vision to promote compliance with export controls and sanctions regulations, as well as encourage and advise on international research collaborations. The Assistant Director will work with Browns Information Security Group to develop new policies, resources, and training programs related to research security.The Assistant Director also supports Browns Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) program, where they will work with the Assistant Director of Conflict of Interest to facilitate annual and ad hoc faculty COI reporting and disclosure, review cases involving potential conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment, provide COI guidance to faculty, support the Conflict of Interest Review Board (COIRB), and implement conflict management plans. The Assistant Director provides programming support and educational content for Browns Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) education.The incumbent will adeptly and independently interpret and apply federal regulations governing export controls, research security, COI, and RCR, stay apprised of evolving regulations, and work with key stakeholders to amend institutional policy and practice as needed . This position is responsible for generating, revising, and updating content on the OVPR website related to research security, export controls, COI, and research ethics education. This position requires access to highly sensitive and confidential information. QualificationsEducation

  • Required: Bachelors degree required, plus 5-7 years relevant experience.
  • Preferred: Masters degreeExperience
    • A minimum of 3-5 years experience working in export controls, research compliance or research administration
    • Working knowledge of regulations and policies governing export controls, research security, conflict of interest and conflict of commitmentJob Competencies
      • Ability to collaborate and work diplomatically with all levels of the organization, including faculty and senior leadership
      • Must be a detail-oriented, self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and priorities to meet aggressive deadlines
      • Adept at learning, or has existing experience, with complex regulations
      • Experience monitoring and interpreting changing policies, regulations and state and federal laws
      • Exceptional communication skills required, including excellent writing and presentation skills with the ability to synthesize and communicate complex information to general audiences
      • Comfortable with public speaking
      • Strictly observes the need for professionalism and confidentiality
      • Strategic problem-solver, able to manage long-term projects that require cross-institutional engagement
      • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, University senior leadership and administrative stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
      • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
      • Must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, able to work independently and juggle competing priorities, and communicate effectively with faculty and administrative stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
