Job Description:

Summary:Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee) the role of the Registered Nurse Colorectal/Motility is to act as an independent practitioner as well as an essential member of the Endoscopy team. The incumbent implements supervises and evaluates the nursing care of each patient using the nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Sets up and operates equipment to perform rectal and esophageal motility tests as well as perform procedures for the anorectal physiology program. Makes minor adjustments to equipment to ensure integrity of test results.Responsibilities:PATIENT CARE COORDINATORResponsible for the safe delivery of patient care:Provides direct nursing care to patients with complex needs.Implements the steps of the nursing process (assessment diagnosis planning intervention and evaluation) and integrates these activities with all members of the health care team.Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care activities and assures compliance to standards.Able to independently perform procedures for the anorectal physiology program. The procedures include: manometry anal ultrasound rectal ultrasound pudendal nerve testing EMG and biofeedback. Also performs rectal and esophageal motility tests on patients to determine voluntary/involuntary muscle movements.According to physicians order sets up equipment to perform rectal or esophageal motility tests. Ensures correct calibration of equipment against established specifications making minor adjustments as necessary.Takes patient bookings and maintains schedule.Receives patients explains test procedure to allay fear and anxiety. May take and record preliminary vital signs. Prepares patient for test; instructs patient as to correct position providing assistance to the patient as necessary; instructs as to specific activities required such as swallowing at specific intervals for esophageal motility tests. May administer pre-test medications as instructed by the physician.According to established procedures and using aseptic techniques inserts tube into esophagus or rectum. Operates equipment monitors graphic readings and is alert to unusual readings caused by improper patient or tube position or improper setting or malfunction of equipment. Makes necessary adjustment to ensure accuracy of test results.Monitors patient reaction to test and medication alerting physician as appropriate. Prepares and maintains records for each patient.Cleans equipment and tubes after each use using water and soap or disinfectant. Maintains area in clean and orderly fashion. According to established guidelines maintains inventory levels of supplies necessary to perform tests.Assists physician or nursing personnel in other related activities in the Gastroenterology area such as setting up room and supplies for receiving patients scheduled for endoscopes testing preparing and maintaining records admission assessments recovery room etc.Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care activities and assures compliance to standards.Manages the implementation of therapeutic/diagnostic orders as per policy.Evaluates and communicates to physician patient response and condition changes.Keeps family informed of care status and changes in that status.Coordinates discharge planning for patients families utilizing hospital and community resources.Teaches patients and families in accordance with standards and patient teaching guidelines.Maintains patient and family confidentiality according to hospital policy.Serves as an active patient and family advocate.Documents according to policy and procedure.Responsible for professional conduct:Responsible to write and maintain policies and procedures for the colorectal and motility programs.Monitors the inventory of medical supplies. Maintains par levels for supplies and orders equipment as necessary staying within departmental budget.Cleans disinfects and maintains equipment and accessories according to policy and procedure.Makes post procedure telephone calls.Meets and maintains credentialing requirements according to the nursing policy and procedures.Maintains a pattern of reliable attendance punctuality and completion of timely work assignments.Responds willingly to the special needs of the department (i.e. flexibility with time).Utilizes time equipment and supplies in a cost-effective manner.Participates in activities including meetings and projects such as Quality Assessment and Improvement.Participates in appropriate staff education programs to maintain and expand job knowledge and skills.Establishes annual developmental goals in collaboration with Clinical Manager.Utilizes appropriate resources in administering care to patients and families.Performs other duties as necessary.Responsible for emergency and safety conduct:Maintains Basic Life Support/ACLS certification. Identifies cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR.Demonstrates adherence to Universal Precautions Safety Programs and other infection control measures.Reviews fire disaster and infection control in manual.Demonstrates ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situation. Checks emergency equipment.Ensures use of proper body mechanics and utilizes assistive devices when appropriate.Maintains an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety.* Exercise proper care in the use of equipment and report need for repair to the appropriate person.* Utilize side rails and restraints in accordance with Nursing procedure and policy of Rhode Island Hospital* Adheres to fall precaution protocolOther information:BASIC KNOWLEDGE:Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.Technical ability to set up and operate equipment make minor adjustments and recognize abnormalities.Interpersonal skills to explain procedures to patients to allay fear and anxiety.Analytical ability to evaluate patient condition and alert physician to unusual conditions.Successful completion of the Hospital's Patient Care Delivery Orientation Program which includes entry level credentialing of selected skills.Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support and ACLSProficiency in software applications.Possess strong communication skills.Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.EXPERIENCE:A minimum of two years experience in med/surg preferably colorectal nursing in a teaching hospital or university setting.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.Position required frequent standing walking and sitting.Exposed to patient care environment with some exposure to communicable disease and to moderately adverse patient care activities.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.Lifespan is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer.
