Summary:ThePerioperative Novice Nurse Program is a 6 month program
dedicated to providingtraining and education to Registered Nurses
either new graduates or experiencedRNs who have not worked in the
intraoperative setting in the previous fiveyears or more. Under the
generalsupervision of the PeriOperative Services Nurse Educator
nurses will beequipped with the fundamental skills and tools
critical to providing patientcare in the perioperative setting.
Internswill be trained to perform the duties of scrub nurse and
circulatingnurse. Responsibilities:Theintern will consistently
apply the corporate values of respect honestyfairness and the

system. The intern is responsible for knowing andacting in

initial five to sixweeks comprises the didactic portion of the
program; consisting of classroomlectures selected evidence-based
literature reviews simulation practice andobservational experiences
in the operating room. During this phase of training the internwill
be paired with preceptors who will model program objectives
exploring thePNDS Domains of Safety Physiologic Response to Surgery
Behavioral Response toSurgery and the Health Care System. Students
will be asked for return demonstration of skills. 2. The remaining
20 weeks oftraining are spent in service-line rotations designed to
familiarize the nurseintern with various surgical specialties
equipment supplies and processes asthey further develop their
critical thinking skills. Interns will progressively become
moreindependent during the program. 3. The intern utilizes the
nursingprocess throughout the pre-intra- and post-operative phases
of care. They will: Performs preop nursing assessments as
demonstrated by a review of patient information. Ensures pertinent
information is readily available (e.g. lab reports consents history
and physical plan of care); ensures pre-operative medications preps
and orders have been carried out; verifies patients identity prior
to surgical procedure; institutes patient and family teaching; and
completes a verbal hand-off from the preoperative nurse.
Demonstrates progressive critical thinking skills as demonstrated
by the development of intraoperative nursing diagnosis outcome
identification and plan of care. Implements patient specific plan
and evaluates the appropriateness of planned or prescribed
treatment. Modifies treatment or contacts physician as
circumstances require. 4. Interns learn to performnursing duties
according to the policies procedures and evidence-based
bestpractice of area assigned. Assistsduring surgical procedures by
ensuring patient safety preparing and/ordirecting others in
preparation of instruments equipment and supplies;scrubbing or
circulating on cases under the tutelage of expert RN and
SurgicalTechnologist preceptors; anticipating needs of surgeon;
maintaining steriletechniques and preventing infection; applying
dressings; administeringmedication; developing the ability to react
to life-threatening situations andproviding for total nursing care
of patients in the Operating Room. 5. Interns learn to maintain
theelectronic medical record reporting pertinent information
regarding patientscondition medication given and treatments
administered during theintraoperative phase of care. 6. Maintains
and enhancesprofessional expertise through engaged participation in
educational activitiesand dedication to lifelong learning. Other
information:BASICKNOWLEDGE: 1. Interpersonal skills toeffectively
communicate with patients physicians and other hospital personnel.
2. Visual and aural acuity tomonitor patient progress. 3.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to providecare to
patients throughout the life span with consideration of
agingprocesses human development stages and cultural patterns in
each step of thecare process. 4. Graduation from accredited school
of nursing. Those individuals possessing an AssociatesDegree in
Nursing must be actively enrolled in an accredited to BSN program.
5. Must have current licensure to practice as aRegistered Nurse in
the State of Rhode Island. 6. All individualsmust successfully
complete the didactic portion of class by passing the FinalExam
with a score of 80%. 7. Successful completion of all service line
rotations asevidenced by positive feedback and reviews from
preceptors and directobservation of students work validating
incorporation of knowledge intopractice. 8. Successful completion
of all PeriOperative NursingCompetencies and demonstrated ability
to practice independently upon graduationfrom the program. 9.
Verbal agreementat day 79 to complete the program and commit to 3
years of employment withinthe department upon graduation from the
Internship Program. Interns who commit to surgical services andday
80 through 3 years from graduation resign from their position
within thedepartment may be required to re-pay the department
tuition costs on apro-rated basis as outlined in the internship
contract. 10. At month 5 prior to graduation from the
PeriOperativeNovice Nurse Program the intern will bid into or be
assigned to an openfulltime position based upon departmental needs.
WORKENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Works in Operating
Room andpost-anesthesia recovery area with frequent exposure to
anesthetic gases. 2. Some risk in injury frompuncture by surgical
instruments exposure to infectious wounds; burns fromautoclaves and
electrical equipment but hazards minimized through adherence
toappropriate established precautionary procedures. 3. Physical
ability forextensive walking and standing; lifting positioning and
pushing patients onstretchers. 4. Works 40 hours per week forthe
duration of the internship program with some rotations to PMs
nightsholidays and weekends. Assigned to callwith an expert nurse
for the duration of the program. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
