Job Description:Under the direction of the Executive Director, CYCLE, the Community Alliance Organizer will work closely with CYCLE staff, Providence youth and parent organizational partners, and community leaders/activists to develop and implement a youth-centered, inter-generational grassroots community organizing effort focused on achieving educational equity. By supporting partners to assert student and parent leadership, the incumbent will play a key role in planning and implementing activities for the OurSchoolsPVD project.Coalition-Building, Outreach, Recruitment, Leadership Development, and Organization/Base BuildingProject/exercise the power of organized youth, parents, and community members in order to influence equitable and just education policy and practice decisions.Facilitate processes to develop, test, and propose visionary solutions to the problems that fuel educational inequity.Work with coalition organizations and other partners to gather, interpret, and popularize information regarding the root causes of educational inequity.Support coalition organizations to identify, recruit, and sustain youth and parent leaders and community members into a grassroots organizing campaign to achieve educational equity.Coordinate and facilitate coalition-building activities among youth and parent partner organizations.Identify, involve, sustain, and replenish youth, parent, and grassroots organizations and participants in the OurSchoolsPVD organizing effort.Deepen participants' issue knowledge and organizing skills set.Create a variety of avenues to participate and evolve roles to generate consistent participation and a core group of youth and parent grassroots leaders.Support and develop relationships across youth and parent organizations.Survey through door-to-door outreach, one-on-ones, phoning, and on-site/tabling.Plan and conduct house meetings, workshops, and community meetings.Represent OurSchoolsPVD at community events or activities organized/hosted by other organizations.Train and inform youth, parents, and community members to be able to effectively motivate others, emphasizing outreach, public speaking, hosting house meetings, and participating in other activities designed to strengthen the organizing effort.Information Gathering and Analysis, Issue Education and Identification, and Campaign DevelopmentImplement activities at the local and state level to deepen understanding of the issues and political landscape relevant to educational equity.Facilitate the development and evolution of a common vision for educational equity and justice.Assist in development of campaign strategy and tactical plans with partner organizations and youth and parent grassroots leaders.Track and stay informed about legislative and other policy activity relevant to the OurSchoolsPVD project.Manage campaign activities and actions.Represent OurSchoolsPVD, as well as training grassroots leaders, to represent youth, parent, and community interests during campaign meetings with decision makers and media.Develop organizing materials, including talking points, fliers, newsletters, fact sheets, pledge cards, etc.Organizational AdministrationMaintain outreach and organizing tracking systems.Maintain contact database(s)/CRM, track quantitative and qualitative data, and report on work and results.Update strategic plans and work management plans.This is a grant funded position that is contingent on funding.Requirements:High school diploma or equivalent.Two years of experience in community organizing, labor organizing, student/youth organizing, or activism.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Familiarity with theories and practices of community organizing and educational issues facing communities of color, working class communities, communities experiencing poverty, and undocumented individuals in Rhode Island.Comfortable working with stakeholders from diverse and sometimes competing interests, including school and district personnel, elected officials, policymakers, community leaders, parents, and youth.Ability to manage volunteers and motivate people to take action.Hardworking, self-disciplined, and works well under pressure.Ability to work nights and some weekends.Proficiency with basic computer skills/software, including Microsoft Office applications.
