Translational (Biomechanical) Engineer II

Company: Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc (US)
Location: Providence

Job Description:

Job Description In June 2019, Vertex announced the establishment of a new research site in the Boston area where research, development, and clinical manufacturing for cell and genetic therapies will be primarily based. Cell and genetic therapies represent two rapidly emerging therapeutic modalities with the potential to treat--and even cure--several of the diseases Vertex is focused on, including sickle cell disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and type 1 diabetes. Further investment in a research site specifically designed to advance these programs will be key to Vertex's continued and sustained leadership in these exciting approaches. At Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) our research teams will bring together the best biology, technologies and enhanced manufacturing capabilities to ensure we bring these cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as possible. Device and Engineering Sciences is seeking a biomechanical engineer to join their growing team within VCGT. The full-time role will support R&D initiatives with a focus on the development of biomechanical strategies, fabrication processes, and analytics to enable the implementation of novel cell delivery systems. The Senior Scientist will support device design and materials research toward the development of novel device designs and soft tissue implantation strategies. The successful candidate will have a strong and demonstrable understanding of biomechanics, structural mechanics, kinematics, and other attributes that have potential to impact device performance. This position is based in Providence, RI, and will report to the Associate Director, Translational Engineering. Activities: * Provide expertise on the mechanical aspects of device performance, including biomechanical assessment of a range of transplant sites with consideration of patient ambulation. * Collaborate with the design and simulation team to identify critical structural and anatomical parameters for effective design. * Evaluate performance of device concepts and prototypes through hands-on evaluation and data interpretation to support design feedback. * Work cross-functionally to assess surgical implications of device parameters in silico and in small and large animals. * Develop test methods for new and existing technology platforms and perform associated Technology Transfer activities. * Design and implement standard and non-standard testing protocols to establish failure modes of device assemblies and components to provide possible solutions through design modifications. * Identify, evaluate, and manage vendors to support early-mid phase device prototyping. * Interface with process development engineers to ensure design for manufacturing. Required qualifications: * Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related discipline. 3-5 years industry experience working with implantable medical devices. * Deep understanding of the structural mechanics of musculoskeletal and soft tissues. * Excellent knowledge of ASTM standards, and other applicable industry standards for mechanical evaluation of medical devices. * Familiarity with nonlinear finite element models, biofidelic constitutive models and their verification through benchtop testing. * Experience in device prototyping. * Ability to quantify experimental results and present to cross-functional groups effectively. * Demonstrated excellence in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments. * Project management skills with flexibility to multi-task and adapt to evolving priorities. Preferred qualifications: * Experience with the development of cell and tissue culture models to recapitulate implant microenvironments. * Experience in small or large animal surgery * Strong knowledge of Minitab or other statistical software for the analysis of design of experiments (DOE) full factorial studies. * Familiarity with emerging manufacturing technologies for rapid prototyping. * Experience working on the development of combination products, preferably delivering living cells. #LI-KW1
