Organizational Overview
Founded in 1989, the College Crusade supports more than 4,000
students in middle school, high school and college each year with
one-on-one advising and year-round programs that focus on academic
enrichment, social and emotional development, career education, and
postsecondary preparation to help them become the first in their
families to earn a college degree.
Purpose of the Position
The High School Advisor works with an assigned caseload of
Crusaders in grades 9-12 attending public school in one of the five
urban target districts. The HS Advisor provides direct services to
high school Crusaders on matters dealing with academics,
college/career readiness and social and emotional wellness. The HS
Advisor links Crusaders to existing school- and community-based
support systems and programs. The HS Advisor maintains personal
contact with Crusaders, their families and school officials and
acts as an advocate and liaison between the student, school,
community and the College Crusade.
Major Responsibilities
Design and deliver programming to Crusaders.
Promote Crusade program offerings and help students identify and
select programs that relate to their needs and interests. Provide
the necessary follow-up to ensure successful participation.
Lead and facilitate workshops on college/career awareness and
readiness, life skills, financial literacy, and other topics.
Assist with the planning and implementation of all transitional
activities (middle school to high school and high school to
postsecondary.)
Build and maintain relationships with Crusaders and other parties
involved in their success.
Form and maintain professional relationships with Crusaders, school
administrators, community agencies and other service providers.
Communicate with families as needed to encourage student
success.
Connect Crusaders with each other and build Crusader identity as a
resource.
Provide advisory support and guidance to Crusaders.
Provide direct, career and academic advising to Crusaders seeking
post-secondary education.
Assist students in clarifying education objectives, identifying
financial aid resources and other appropriate support services as
needed.
Participate in professional development and program meetings.
Monitor and update assigned caseload of Crusaders.
Provide Crusader contact information updates to the IT
department.
Assist with the collection of all required forms.
Maintain weekly contact with students and keep a record of this in
the contact log.
Perform other duties as required.
Position Qualification and Competencies
Essential KSOC's (knowledge, skills, abilities, and other
characteristics)
Knowledge of public education systems, community resources and
higher education preferred.
High energy level, attention to detail, time management, ability to
handle multiple tasks, strong interpersonal skills and comfort with
public speaking a must.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access) and able to
learn and effectively use the latest software and technology
systems employed by the Crusade.
Must be able to work independently, take initiative to meet
established goals and accept supervision from Director of High
School Success.
Must be willing and able to contribute as a productive member of an
integrated Crusade program/service delivery team.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in education, human services or related
field.
2-3 years' experience in direct services to adolescents.
Bilingual a plus (Spanish, Portuguese, Cape Verde, Hmong,
Cambodian.)
Other Requirements
Schedule: Must be willing to maintain a flexible schedule,
including some weekend and evening hours.
Transportation: Must have own reliable transportation, valid
driver's license and proof of insurance.
